Types of Therapy
The following is a list of specific psychotherapy approaches and therapy types. Some of the therapy types listed have been around for many years, others are relatively new. Some have been grounded in research, others in theory, and some rely on anecdotal evidence. Some are popularly accepted, others are cutting edge, and some controversial. GoodTherapy.org is not in a position to endorse or disapprove of any therapy types. Our intention is to promote the use and awareness of the universal elements of good therapy which can be found across therapy types. However, GoodTherapy.org does reserve the right to exclude models which clearly conflict with what we believe to be healthy psychotherapy. We encourage you to explore, research, and discover for yourself which kind of therapy may be a fit for you. On each therapy page we've included a basic overview and links to other sites with information on these therapy types so you can have an easy starting point. We wish you the best on your journey http://www.goodtherapy.org/types-of-therapy.html

Mental Experience and Dissociation in Psychosis:
The experience of our minds may be shaped by belief. The idea that our minds are whatever we imagine them to be may seem like an assertion that is hard to prove. But confidence is crucial to learning and knowledge, so the term “imagination” in this sense simply connotes a confident belief in our constructed mental processes and our minds’ content.
...
Overall, the reality of trauma emerging from auditory hallucinated experiences will cause psychotic individuals to dissociate and withdraw even from experience in their own mental realm. The symptoms of dissociation may be targeted for treatment.
A compassionate and empathic psychotherapist may be able to alleviate some of the schizophrenic’s suffering in this regard. The psychotic individual will respond well to treatment by his psychotherapist when this clinician can be trusted to not harm the schizophrenic client. Essentially, implacable good will on the part of the psychotherapist is advocated as treatment for the dissociative symptoms of schizophrenia.

Re: Types of Therapy
“Talking Back to Madness”
March 17, 2014
Science notices that “For decades, antipsychotic drugs have been the main line of defense, but they have serious side effects and lots of patients end up not taking them. Recently, a number of clinical trials have suggested that psychological approaches, including old-fashioned “talk” psychotherapy and a method called cognitive behavioral therapy, can be moderately effective in many cases. These techniques engage with the human being behind the symptoms and are attracting increasing attention from the medical profession.” http://www.madinamerica.com/2014/03/tal ... k-madness/
From the article:
“Government agencies and insurance companies can help by covering such treatments, even though they are more expensive in the long run than drugs, say Arenella and others. They are worth trying, Bracken says. “I have a lot of patients whom I would say recovered from psychosis. I see people who move on with their lives, get their quality of life back, are able to live independently.” Indeed, the popular notion that a schizophrenia diagnosis is a life sentence of mental illness is not borne out by the statistics: In one typical study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 2004, researchers found that nearly 50% of first-episode schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder patients were symptom-free after 5 years.
